Polyarnye Nochi #6

Simon Roberts

Simon Roberts is a British artist working with photography and video. His works can be found in major institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Deutsche Börse, and Musuem of Contemporary Photography. Unforgiving and dramatic winters have often been regarded as one of Russia’s most defining characteristics. Russian winter is redolent both of great hardship, extreme temperatures, physical privation, and an atmosphere of isolation and desolation, but also of great beauty. Polyarnye Nochi is a series that documents the Kola Peninsula in north-western Russia from mid-December to mid-January, when—as a result of its proximity to the Arctic Circle—darkness blankets the region for nearly 24 hours a day.

Why we believe in: These photographs explore the uneasy co-existence of man and nature but also capture the indefinable and elusive beauty that emerges as a result of this precarious alliance.

We warmly welcome Simon Roberts to Jenny DAO
